100 years ago in 1916, Clarence Saunders, a flour and grain salesman, saw that consumers wasted time and grocers wasted money with the traditional style of rural shops. He invented the first self service supermarket called Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, Tennessee. The chain grew to 1,200 stores by 1923.
